This finely engraved copperplate, the “Map of Africa according to the latest discoveries and views with special regard to Karl Ritter's Geography,” compiled in 1824 and published in 1826, represents one of the earliest and most detailed 19th-century European attempts to depict the geography of the African continent with scientific precision. It was compiled by Heinrich Berghaus, a pioneering Prussian geographer and cartographer, and engraved by Heinrich Brose. The map reflects the state of European geographical knowledge of Africa in 1824 and incorporates the latest discoveries and travel reports of that time. The map was published by the Stuttgart-based publisher J. G. Cotta, known for its high-quality scientific and literary works.

It encompasses the entire African continent and shows political, physical, and exploratory features as they were understood in Europe around 1824.

The surrounding seas are detailed with currents, routes, and islands, including those used by European navigators. Latitude and longitude grids are precisely engraved, emphasizing the scientific orientation of the map.
