Global Ocean Floor | 11 Degrees East Meridian | Equal Earth Projection

"World Ocean Floor" shows the topography of the seabed, which covers about 71 percent of the Earth's surface and is of central importance to nature and humanity. It provides shelter, food, and breeding grounds for countless animal and plant species, thus contributing significantly to marine biodiversity.

The organisms in the seabed also play an important role in the nutrient cycle by decomposing dead organisms and making nutrients available again. Sediments and seagrass meadows store large amounts of carbon, thus making a significant contribution to climate protection. For humans, the seabed is a source of food, a carbon sink, and an economic resource. At the same time, it is increasingly burdened by the extraction of mineral resources: interventions can destroy sensitive habitats, stir up sediments, and cause long-term damage to marine ecosystems. Its protection is therefore of crucial importance for nature, the climate, and humanity.

The map is a modern interpretation of the classic Heezen/Tharp/Berann map. It is based on the latest bathymetric data, a combination of GEBCO and BathDNN25 data, a product derived from SWOT using a deep neural network. This hybrid data was then visualized as an oblique relief representation using Eduard and Natural Scene Designer software. As on the Heezen/Tharp/Berann map, topographical features appear three-dimensional, including drop shadows. The GEBCO Undersea Feature Names Gazetteer served as the primary source for the nomenclature.

The map uses the equal-area Equal Earth projection with the meridian at 11° East in the center.

It is printed using the giclée process on archival paper in two sizes: 56 × 102 cm and 84 × 150 cm. In the large format, the map becomes an eye-catcher in a living room, study, office, or classroom.
