"KLM Royal Dutch Air Lines – Amsterdam-Batavia" – an impressive 1934 advertising poster documenting KLM's legendary flight route between Amsterdam and Batavia (modern-day Jakarta) on Java.
Executed as a lithograph, the map presents the route in a bold Art Deco style on a stylized globe against a night-blue, star-studded background. A four-engine aircraft from the KLM fleet hovers above the globe, surmounted by the slogan "1/3 of the Earth's Circumference" – a reference to the enormous distance of approximately 9,000 miles covered by this route.
The flight connection, highlighted in orange, leads from Amsterdam via two possible European feeder routes – either via Leipzig, Budapest, and Belgrade or via Marseille and Rome – to Athens, and from there on via Mersa Matruh, Cairo, Gaza, Rutbah Wells, Baghdad, Bushire, Jask, Karachi, Jodhpur, Allahabad, Calcutta, Akyab, Rangoon, Bangkok, Alor Star, Medan, Singapore, and Palembang to Batavia and Bandung. Depending on the initial route chosen, the journey consists of 23 (via Rome) or 24 (via Budapest) legs, each listed with exact distances in miles in the legend at the bottom left.
A detailed key also distinguishes between the various types of routes: the direct KLM Amsterdam–Batavia connection, combined KLM-KNILM services, connecting flights of Imperial Airways, the Tata Line (Karachi–Bombay–Madras), Air France, and various shipping lines (Java-China-Japan Line, K.P.M. lines, Africa Line, etc.) that complemented the extensive route network of that time. The note "Twice Weekly Service" underscores the remarkable frequency of this intercontinental flight service for the 1930s.
An outstanding historical document for collectors of aviation history, Art Deco, and the Dutch colonial era.
