The map "Denmark, including Schleswig and Holstein" was designed and engraved by J. W. Lowry and published in 1863 as a hand-colored lithograph. It documents Denmark during a phase of profound political change and combines precise cartographic representation with high documentary value.

The map consists of two sheets. The political borders are highlighted with careful hand-coloring, clearly delineating the various administrative and sovereign territories. The map records numerous cities, towns, and geographical features, thus offering a dense and well-structured image of the landscape at that time.

For precise orientation, it includes a graticule with lines of longitude and latitude as well as three scale bars for geographical, British, and Danish miles. A detailed legend explains the cartographic symbols used and facilitates the distinction between cities, smaller settlements, and other important landmarks. The main map is complemented by a detailed map of the Baltic Sea island of Bornholm, which does justice to its geographical position and strategic importance.

Particular attention is paid to the Duchies of Schleswig and Holstein, which are depicted together with the rest of the Danish state territory. The careful color-coding of the regions clarifies the complex territorial structure of the time and illustrates the political claims to these areas. As a result, the map is not only a geographical aid but also a vivid source regarding the political situation in Northern Europe in the mid-19th century.
The publication took place immediately before the Second Schleswig War of 1864, when the so-called Schleswig-Holstein Question dominated European diplomacy. The conflict between Denmark and the German Confederation over the status of the duchies was of great political significance that extended far beyond Scandinavia.
