World Map | Mercator Projection | 1915 | Vintage Map
The classic among world maps: the "Mercator projection world map," which shaped sailors, explorers, and cartographers for centuries. Conceived as conformal and with straight course lines, it does distort the surface proportions toward the poles—a circumstance that most recently even occupied the UN General Assembly, which voted on September 4, 2026, with 164 in favor, six abstentions, and one vote against (USA) for the increased use of equal-area projections such as "Equal Earth." Yet it is precisely this peculiarity that gives the Mercator map its charm: Greenland appears almost as large as Africa here, a cartographic curiosity that continues to invite viewers to look and discuss to this day.
