Church Atlas | Switzerland | Vintage Map
The map "Diocesi della Svizzera" shows the entire territory of Switzerland, divided into its ecclesiastical dioceses: Basel, St. Gallen, Chur, Sion/Valais, and Milan with Ticino. Surrounding areas such as Württemberg, Bavaria, Vorarlberg, Liechtenstein, Savoy, Piedmont, and Lombardy are noted by name on the map's edge, placing Switzerland within a Central European context. Numerous lakes – Lake Geneva, Lake Constance, Lake Lucerne, and Lake Maggiore – are highlighted, as are the Alpine regions through fine hatching. Cities such as Basel, Lausanne, Geneva, Chur, and Lugano are recorded, and the bishop's seat of St. Gallen is marked with a red dot. The map illustrates the small-scale, topographically influenced diocesan structure of Switzerland in the 19th century, whose episcopal boundaries only partially coincide with the political cantonal borders.
