The map "Provincia Ecclesiastica di Messico" / "Ecclesiastical Province of Mexico" depicts the entire Mexican territory of the 19th century, including Alta California, New Mexico, and Texas as northern peripheral regions. The country is divided into numerous color-coded dioceses or ecclesiastical provinces – identifiable by pastel shades of pink, green, yellow, violet, and turquoise – each representing historical bishoprics such as Sonora, Chihuahua, Durango, Guadalajara, Valladolid (Michoacán), Mexico City, Puebla, Oaxaca, and Chiapas. Episcopal sees are highlighted by red dots, such as La Paz, Monterey, San Luis Potosí, Mérida, and the capital, Messico, itself. The map also shows the characteristic shape of Lower California as well as the Yucatán Peninsula in the southeast. Mountain ranges are depicted with hatching, and river systems are finely drawn. The calligraphic labeling of the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico underscores the cartographic ambition. The sheet vividly conveys the extensive, complex diocesan structure of the young Mexican state.
