Church Atlas | Europe | Vintage Map
The "Carta Generale di Europa" shows a general, politically colored overview of the European continent, without ecclesiastical divisions. The depiction ranges from Iceland and Scandinavia in the north to the Mediterranean region and North Africa in the south, and from the British Isles in the west to Persia and the vast expanses of Russia in the east. Countries such as France, Spain, Austria, Turkey, and Russia are delineated from one another in delicate pastel shades—pink, green, yellow, beige—while seas and oceans are rendered in blue. A fine graticule of longitude and latitude lines overlays the entire map, serving for geographical orientation. Calligraphic labels for the seas, such as "Oceano Atlantico," "Mare Mediterraneo," and "Oceano Glaciale Artico," as well as a multitude of small place names, characterize the dense visual field of the map. Scandinavia, the Baltic states, and the western part of Russia including Siberia are also depicted in great detail. The representation corresponds to the political layout of Europe around the mid-19th century, with the Ottoman Empire ("Turchia") in the Balkans and a German and Italian landscape of states that had not yet been unified.
