The map "Carta Generale di Affrica" provides a general, secular overview of the African continent with a dense grid of longitude and latitude lines. The north is depicted in the greatest detail: Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, and the Arabian Peninsula are named, while the Sahara and large parts of Central Africa are only roughly outlined as the "Deserto di Libia" – a reflection of the continent's interior, which was still unexplored at the time. In the south, an area around Mozambique and Southern Africa is shown, and Madagascar lies isolated in the Indian Ocean. Calligraphic inscriptions frame the seas: "Oceano Atlantico" to the west, "Mare delle Indie" to the east, and "Grande Oceano Australe" to the south. The equator as well as the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn are marked. The map reflects the European state of knowledge regarding Africa in the mid-19th century, with clearly mapped coastal regions and a largely unknown, cartographically only sketchily captured interior.
