Genoa | Italy | Map from 1895
€49,00
The “Carta della Provincia di Genova (parte della Liguria) e dell'Isola di Capraia” is a finely engraved map of the Province of Genoa from an Italian atlas dating back to 1895. The calligraphic title in the upper left, with its flowing lettering, is a real eye-catcher. The centerpiece is the vast Gulf of Genoa, stretching from the Riviera di Ponente in the west to the Riviera di Levante in the east. The coast is densely populated with Savona, Albenga, Alassio, Genoa, Rapallo, Sestri Levante, and La Spezia. In the hinterland, finely hatched mountain ranges of the Apennines extend to the plains around Alessandria, Tortona, and Novi. Delicate coloring in pink, yellow, blue, and green marks the provincial and district boundaries. Roads, railway lines, river courses, and countless place names make the map a detailed historical document. A framed inset in the upper right shows the island of Capraia, below which the legend (“Segni convenzionali”) explains the symbols used, and at the bottom edge are scale bars in kilometers and Italian miles. A beautiful wall decoration for lovers of the Italian Riviera, travelers to Liguria, and collectors of historical cartography.
Historical maps show signs of time and use, the intensity and nature of which vary depending on the map and its intended purpose. The print offered is a reproduction.
