Crossroads of the Pacific | Historical Pacific Map | 1906
The historical Pacific map "The Crossroads of the Pacific" depicts Honolulu as a central hub for Pacific shipping, from which shipping routes radiate out to ports in all directions. Created in 1906 for the Hawaii Promotion Committee, the map impressively illustrates the geostrategic location of the Hawaiian Islands between America, Asia, and Oceania. Fine lines extend from Honolulu to over thirty destination ports—from Vladivostok and Yokohama in the west, to San Francisco, Seattle, and Panama in the east, down to Valparaíso and Cape Horn in the south. Each route is labeled with the exact distance in nautical miles, complemented by two tables at the bottom of the map that list all distances from Honolulu to ports in the western and eastern Pacific. The fine graticule, the delicate pen-and-ink cartography of the continents, and the classic title cartouche "THE CROSSROADS OF THE PACIFIC" give the sheet the characteristic charm of historical maritime cartography. A delightful collector's item for enthusiasts of maritime history, logistics, and Pacific trade routes.
