Paris 1900

This lithographed map series from a Paris atlas shows the arrondissements of Paris in detailed, hand-colored city maps. Each map is dedicated to one arrondissement and is further divided into four numbered quarters, clearly distinguished by different colored areas. A legend in the lower left names each quarter and indicates the scale, which varies between approximately 1:7,000 and 1:14,000 depending on the sheet.

The maps precisely record the dense Parisian street network including street names, public buildings (churches, schools, barracks, ministries, hospitals), squares, bridges, train stations, and prominent structures such as the Louvre, the Palace of Justice, Notre-Dame Cathedral, Les Invalides, the Arc de Triomphe, the Opéra Garnier, and the Panthéon. The Seine with its quays and the islands Île de la Cité and Île Saint-Louis, as well as the first lines of the Paris Métro "Chemin de fer Métropolitain" are also marked – an indication of the period of creation around 1900, shortly after the opening of the first subway lines for the World's Fair.
